Pope Francis: If the Jubilee doesn’t touch your pocket it isn’t a true Jubilee

The Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “Penance can be expressed in many and various ways but above all in fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. These and many other forms of penance can be practiced in the daily life of a Christian, particularly during the time of Lent and on the penitential day of Friday” (no. 301).

Lent is a time especially focused on works of charity and penance, and this Lent comes in the Year of Mercy. In his Ash Wednesday audience, Pope Francis encouraged us to share what we have. “It is a jubilee year (...) for converting, so that our heart may become larger, more generous, more a child of God, with more love. I’ll tell you one thing: if this wish, if the Jubilee does not touch the pocket, it is not a true jubilee. Do you understand?”

Those of us involved in this website also want to support the Pope’s desire to share fraternally with people in need – “be courageously open to sharing, and this is mercy!” So we offer our readers the opportunity to donate to a project inspired by St Josemaria in Ivory Coast: Walé Health Center.

It has been estimated that in Ivory Coast more than 80,000 children under 5 die every year from causes that could be prevented by better nutrition and hygiene. The main cause of mortality is malaria, followed by gastrointestinal and respiratory infections. Ignorance of hygiene and nutrition has a terrible effect on the health of the population. And in view of the important role played by health professionals, their training and skills need to be improved and updated. For the past ten years Walé Health Center, on the outskirts of Yamoussoukro, has provided quality medical care to the poor of the district. The aim of the current project is to enable Walé to reduced the number of sicknesses related to poor sanitation and malnutrition.

Contributions to the Walé project can be made through Harambee at this link.
